Never Overlook the Significance of ‘Typical Evening Speed’

The National Broadband Network (NBN) serves as a crucial wholesale network in Australia, connecting users to internet service providers (ISPs) through Points of Interconnect (POIs). This infrastructure enables ISPs to deliver internet services to end-users. NBN directly influences the internet speed users experience through different NBN speed tiers.

When selecting an internet plan, it’s essential to consider multiple factors. Firstly, comparing NBN tiers is crucial, as they determine the speed and performance of your internet connection. Additionally, you should assess the NBN connection type and ISPs’ review .

Another significant metric to consider is the ‘typical evening speed,’ which characterizes the expected internet speed during peak hours from 7 pm to 11 pm. This timeframe represents when many users are online simultaneously. Evaluating the typical evening speed is essential, as it provides insights into the ISP’s performance, reliability, and capacity during periods of high demand, both domestically and internationally.

NBN25 Typical Evening Speed

The NBN25 tier delivers a download speed of 25Mbps and offers two options for upload speed: either 10Mbps or 5Mbps. During typical evening usage, most Internet Service Providers (ISPs) can provide the full download speed and around 80% of the maximum upload speed. Some ISPs go beyond, offering the potential to achieve the maximum upload speed. Notably, our observations reveal that higher-cost plans do not necessarily guarantee the fastest typical evening speed, as certain more affordable plans can deliver the most rapid performance during this crucial period.

Here is a list of NBN25 plans sorted by fastest typical download speeds.

NBN50 Typical Evening Speed

The NBN50 tier offers a download speed of 50Mbps and an upload speed of 20Mbps. Regarding typical evening speeds, approximately one-third of ISPs can provide the full download speed, with only one ISP claiming to reach the maximum upload speed. Other ISPs typically offer upload speeds ranging between 18-16Mbps. Similar to NBN25, certain ISPs may boast the ability to achieve the maximum upload speed. Notably, we observed that more expensive plans do not necessarily guarantee the fastest typical evening speeds, as some more affordable plans can offer higher speeds during peak hours.

The Drawback of Typical Evening Speed

When selecting an internet plan, relying solely on the typical evening speed poses a challenge. The primary drawback lies in the inability to verify the claims made by the provider before signing the contract and connecting to your ISP. The typical evening speed is promoted by the ISP itself, lacking third-party certification. Moreover, it’s essential to note that the speed, discussed in the past, may not guarantee similar performance presently or in the future.
