Relieve Energy Bills Stress: Simple Home Changes

Table of Contents

With the recent announcement of energy price hikes for 1 July 2023, the idea of turning on your heating this winter might be frightening. The situation becomes even more daunting considering Australian homes’ inadequate insulation and chilly nature.

However, despite these challenges, there are several ways to stay warm and reduce energy expenses.

Compare Energy Plans, Discover Rebates and Concessions

When considering energy plans, think of it as shopping for a winter coat. Like you explore different stores to find the best deal within your budget, energy plans require a similar approach, although they can be a bit more complex. However, remember that switching plans after 12 months can often lead to a better deal. By comparing your options, you can secure the best available market offer. Some people who have stayed with their energy providers for years might be on a standing offer. Standing offers act as a safety net, determined by energy regulators, ensuring that households not actively searching for energy plans are not overcharged. The difference between standing offers and the cheapest available market offer depends on your state or territory.

Consider inquiring with your energy retailer about potential rebates or concessions for which you might be eligible. Surprisingly, millions of Australians missed out on these benefits last year. The Consumer Policy Research Centre revealed these insights in late 2022.

Transform your living space and embrace lifestyle adjustments

Embrace the DIY spirit to enhance your home and lifestyle. We’ve gathered expert tips from Jon Briskin, executive general manager for Origin Retail, to help you along the way.

  1. Utilize rugs and carpets: Add rugs or carpets to insulate cold floors and retain heat, making your space warmer and cozier.
  2. Invest in an electric blanket: If you’re home alone and desire cozy warmth, consider investing in an electric blanket. Running at an average cost of $10 over the winter season can provide comfort and save on heating expenses.
  3. Weatherproof your home: Use weatherproof tape or door snakes to seal gaps and keep warm air inside the room. This reduces the strain on your heater, potentially cutting heating costs up to 25%.
  4. Layer up: Opt for suitable materials close to your body and layer up for warmth. Ensure a snug yet comfortable fit, and avoid cotton, as it tends to retain moisture.
  5. Optimize heating system: Ensure your heating system is well-maintained and operating efficiently. Regularly clean or replace filters, and consider having a professional inspect and service your system annually.
  6. Avoid frequent heater cycling: Instead of repeatedly switching your heater on and off, maintain a consistent temperature to prevent unnecessary energy consumption and additional costs associated with restarting the heater.
  7. Utilize ceiling fans: In reverse mode, ceiling fans can help circulate warm air throughout the room. Gently pushing warm air downward can improve heat distribution and make the space feel cozier.
  8. Reduce clothes dryer usage: Whenever possible, minimize the use of your clothes dryer. Take advantage of sunny days by air-drying your clothes, even if you bring them indoors at night. This approach not only saves energy but also avoids the lingering damp smell.
  9. Take shorter showers: While hot showers are tempting during winter, they can significantly increase water and energy bills. Limiting your shower time to around 4 minutes instead of the average seven would save up to $150 per year.
  10. Harness sunlight: Make the most of sunny days by opening your curtains or blinds and allowing the sunshine to warm your spaces. As the afternoon sun ages, close the curtains to retain warmth and use draught stoppers to prevent cool air from seeping in.

With these DIY adjustments and lifestyle changes, you can create a cozier home while optimizing energy consumption and reducing costs.
