NBN Plans Boost Download Speeds 5 Times at No Additional Cost

Table of Contents

Recently, there has been widespread awareness of a potential news update indicating that NBN (National Broadband Network) may significantly enhance its speeds, up to 5 times faster than the current speed, by the end of the year at no additional cost to retailers. Currently, it remains uncertain whether the retailers will pass on this speed boost to their customers without imposing extra fees or if they will introduce additional charges for various reasons.

As per the proposal, NBN Co is set to enhance the speeds of their NBN100, NBN250, and NBN500/1000 plans. Notably, the most substantial benefit is expected for existing NBN100 users, whose download speed is anticipated to increase to 500 Mbps. If the current retailers decide not to raise the prices of their plans, customers may only need to pay around $90 per month to enjoy a 500 Mbps speed, compared to the current scenario where a similar speed could cost more than $120 per month.

To experience such ultra-fast speeds, it’s advisable to ensure that your connection is established through HFC (Hybrid Fibre Coaxial) and FTTP (Fibre to the Premises) networks. If you are currently using FTTN (Fibre to the Node) or FTTC (Fibre to the Curb), consider exploring the option of upgrading to FIBRE if your area qualifies. Some providers are currently extending a complimentary nbn® fibre upgrade offer.
If you reside in rural areas where FTTP/HFC is not yet available, you may not be able to enjoy the benefits of NBN’s plans. However, alternative options are also available, such as satellite internet provided by Starlink or 5G internet services offered by Telstra, Optus, and Vodafone. The download speeds from these alternatives can compete with those of NBN internet.
